The shipyard was still young, the boats solid, the sailing characteristics good. And the advertising texts emphasised different things than they do today

In the original brochure, the Giebelstadt-based company advertised the 890 as being able to "mix a hard drink even hard upwind". You're unlikely to read that today, even though many modern yachts have by no means lost this characteristic.

Nevertheless, the 890 is surprising. The build quality is good, as is the performance under sail. Not exactly what you would have expected from the boat at first glance. All the more surprising are the sometimes cramped conditions below deck. The berths are rather short at 1.90 metres, the headroom matches the length of the beds. The mini-toilet room on the test ship fits into the picture. But: The ship is almost 40 years old, so the demands were different. Just like the advertising copy.

If you want to know exactly whether the Bavaria 890 fits into your own pre-owned boat-buying scheme, you should read the detailed test inYACHT 21/2017, which will be on newsstands from 27 September. is ready.
